Please welcome Kathleen Carlson to the UA College of Medicine Phoenix

Effective Monday, February 6, Kathleen joined the AHSL Phoenix library faculty as our first education librarian!  We are most happy to have her here, as she brings superb experience as a health sciences librarian, most recently at the downtown Phoenix campus of ASU, and prior to that as a hospital librarian at John C, Lincoln Hospital.  Kathleen can be reached at KNCarlso@email.arizona.edu and at via phone 602-827-2340.

2012 CABL Officers take over at December Meeting

Nita Mailander (President) of Grand Canyon University Library and Sue Espe (President-Elect) of Banner Gateway Medical Center took charge of the gavel and leadership from past President Bryan Nugent of Banner Baywood at the annual meeting and luncheon. Debra Schneider of Scottsdale Healthcare, was elected Treasurer.  Bryan will continue to serve as past president.  Also continuing are Becky Birr and April Aguiñaga as Archivists and Kathy Zeblisky as Hospitality and Member Relations.  Kathleen Carlson and Jacque Doyle will carry on as web coordinators, with Amy Nadell of Fortis College backing them up and learning the ropes.

Kathy and Phil Zeblisky were thanked for their wonderful continuing hospitality hosting this event, and all members were acknowledged for their yummy contributions to the great feast!  Photos from Kathy are posted here.

The proposed amendments to the bylaws were approved, and will soon be posted. A new Operating Manual derived from historical practice and the bylaws has been posted here under Documents and Reports.

MLA Webcast: Connecting E-science and Team Science: The Changing Nature of Research and Meeting, Nov 18

Amy Nadell, director of the LRC at Fortis College, and a new CABL member, provided a truly excellent facility for this webinar. Fortis provided lunch, and we enjoyed learning about Fortis, listening to the MLA speakers, and networking with each other.  The session was followed by a business meeting; minutes are forthcoming.  Leslee Shell mentioned two interesting articles about higher education and libraries:

The Webinar Connecting E-science and Team Science: The Changing Nature of Research was interesting and provocative.  I am hopeful their presentations will be available online!

Abstract

Be in the forefront of searchers who understand how to get the best pearls from the PubMed database. Discover what has changed and what has remained the same! This class will cover an overview of recent changes to PubMed, hidden treasures and strategies for searching in PubMed and mobile options. Learn how to combine your knowledge and experience of PubMed with the new changes to make your searching even more powerful. Promoting PubMed in your institution will also be covered. Class will include demos, discussion, hands-on practice and guided exercises. The class is geared for intermediate and advanced PubMed searchers. The class is a four hour session.

Objectives

Attendees will be able to

  1. Recognize PubMed design changes
  2. Interpret search details and modify them
  3. Employ suggested search strategy approaches
  4. Discover new ideas for promoting PubMed searches or services in their institutions
  5. Explore mobile options for searching PubMed

Approved for 4 hours of Medical Library Association Continuing Education Units.
